Dennis Stokely, a top celebrity hairstylist whose work has appeared on “American Idol” and red-carpets everywhere, including the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Golden Globes, is a hairstylist and the Artistic Director at Salon Montage at Montage Palmetto Bluff. Here he offers a glimpse of must-have hairstyles for summer gleaned from the latest runways of New York.
Runways and red-carpets instantly provide a glimpse of must-have hairstyles. New York Fashion Week wrapped recently and the annual Met Gala, hosted by Vogue and its editor, Anna Wintour, kicked off the new Comme des Garçons Exhibition for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Both events brought together the worlds of beauty and celebrity with a bounty of ideas for sexy, sophisticated and summer-cool hairdos. From Malibu inspired beach waves to bridal bouffants, here are a few of my favorite trending looks for brides and babes everywhere.
SUPER SLEEK: This modern and polished look is flat-out gorgeous! Kim Kardashian, dressed in white at the Met Gala, rocks her lob haircut (long-bob) to perfection.
How to: Part hair in the center, blow dry smooth, apply a heat protectant, finish with a flatiron.
HIGH PONYTAIL: Supermodel Gisele Bundchen shuts down the red-carpet! Her high ponytail exposes the cutout back of her Stella McCartney gown and the clean sweep of all of her hair away from her face allows her smoldering smokey eyes and nude lips to shine. Of course, arriving on the arm of the NFL’s hunkiest quarterback, Tom Brady, adds to her star power.
How to: Secure the hair in a high and tight ponytail, use a medium-sized curling iron to create loose curls and add a little shine spray.
BLONDE BOMBSHELLS: Donatella Versace and Kylie Jenner team up with two fresh blonde looks! This unexpected duo wowed the red-carpet. Girls everywhere are asking stylists for colorful highlights. Donatella nails it—her acid-yellow highlights (most likely extensions) are a perfect pairing with her shimmering gold gown and Kylie’s cropped platinum wig is super fun and chic!
How to: Check out all the latest hair accessories at your favorite wig shop.
TOP-KNOTS: Every girl’s must-have hairstyle for spring and summer is the top-knot. Kate Hudson rocks this icy-white confection! Her asymmetrical gown and flowing train seem understated and elegant. Kate looks like a million bucks.
How to: Place a super-tight ponytail at the tip-top of your head, then wrap and pin into place.
WEDDING BELLES: At Montage, Palmetto Bluff, I always say that “walking down the aisle to get married is like walking the red-carpet in Hollywood!” Wedding season is in full swing and this half-up, half-down hairstyle that I created for a Southern bride is always one of the most requested looks year after year.
How to: Set the top of the hair with big velcro rollers, set the bottom of the hair with a large curling iron, tease the top and pin the hair back off of the face.
